Château Mouton Rothschild
Bordeaux / France
The first vines at this Château date back to the start of the 18th century. Due to a period of lower than usual quality, the chateau only managed the 2nd growth status. This was until 1973 when Mouton Rothschild become the only wine from the 2nd growth status to be upgraded to 1st growth. Now Mouton Rothschild sits along side Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Latour, Château Margaux, Château Haut Brion.
Baron Philippe de Rothschild, who assumed control in 1922 had powerful ambition for the Chateau, introducing many improvements. One unique attribute for Mouton Rothschild was introduced after the Second World War.
Baron Philippe employed a different artist to design the label for each vintage, with famous designers including Prince Charles, Chagall, Braque, Tapies, Picasso, Francis Bacon, Dali, Balthus, Jeff Koons to name but a few. Mouton Rothschild labels are proving to be highly collectable and can fetch high prices in good condition.
