Château Pichon-Longueville-Lalande Pauillac 2ème Grand Cru Classé 2009
Unusually for a Pauillac, Pichon Lalande contains around one third Merlot, which adds "a persuasive, perfumed smoothness" and makes it one of the most popular of the great Second Growths. Thanks to manager Madame de Lencquesaing's considerable investment in the vineyards and cellar in the 1980s, the property is now on top form. More recently, the estate was bought by Louis Roederer and Deutz Champagne, who wisely retained the talented winemaking team.2009 was among the finest vintages in living memory, producing a Pichon that's "unusually full bodied as well as unctuously textured, voluptuous, and incredibly pure" (Parker). Enjoy with roast red meats when young, and with more complex sauced meat or game dishes when more mature.
