Château Simard 2005

Claude 'Coco' Mazière of Château Simard was a Saint Emilion winemaker of the old school and liked to create wines with plenty of structure. They took a bit of time to come around, but when they did they were simply fabulous. For some reason, in his later years he stopped selling his bottles - but after his death his nephew contacted our Wine Director and gave us access to an amazing hoard of past vintages. After a thoroughly enjoyable tasting he snapped up the best of the bunch - including this wonderfully ripe 2005. Though approachable now, this beautifully structured red will repay cellaring for at least another 10 years and will make an impressive partner to a Sunday roast, a rich venison stew or a piece of mature farmhouse Cheddar.
